Collection Notes: A minimum 8-hour fast is required. Grossly hemolyzed or grossly lipemic specimens are not acceptable. Patient should avoid eating liver, or taking multivitamins or vitamin K for 24-hours prior to sample collection. Centrifuge within 1 hour of collection and immediately separate plasma from cells into a plastic screw-capped vial. Freeze immediately and protect specimen from light at all times; use foil wrapping or amber tubes. Ship frozen.

Clinical Utility: Vitamin K deficiency leads to easy bruising or excessive bleeding.
