Collection Notes: Do not submit specimens that are grossly hemolyzed, grossly lipemic, or icteric. Correct handling of patient samples is critical to ensure the integrity of the intact PTH molecule. Plasma should be physically separated from cells as soon as possible with a maximum limit of 2 hours from the time of collection.
Clinical Utility: The primary function of PTH, Intact is to maintain the serum total calcium concentration within a narrow range. The net effects of PTH are to increase the serum concentration of calcium and to decrease that of phosphate. PTH, Intact is useful in making the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism and secondary hyperparathyroidism.
