Collection Notes: Hemolyzed, clotted or frozen blood specimens are not acceptable. Transport at ambient temperature. Do not freeze. If submitting slides, there should be one thick and one thin blood film smear on two separate slides as well as the EDTA tube.

Clinical Utility: The identification of malarial parasites is used to determine treatment and prognosis.
