Clinical Utility: Estradiol (E2) plays a key role in the female reproduction system. It is responsible for the development and maintenance of female reproductive tissues and secondary sexual characteristics. If levels are low, it can lead to symptoms such as irregular periods, infertility, hot flashes, and mood swings. If levels are high, it could indicate an ovarian tumor, PCOS, or that the patient is taking estradiol hormone replacement. In men, E2 is produced in the testes and adrenal glands and can affect libido, erections, sperm production, bone density, and cognitive function.
